Commissioning photography Tip 04 – What equipment do they use does it matter

Written on 07 Jul 2011, 02:50 PM

Naturally when it comes to equipment choice photographers have personal preferences. However certain subjects DO require some sophisticated lighting techniques using a myriad of light shaping accessories that will help to make your products come alive.

It is not acceptable to turn up to a shoot at a high tech factory with just an on camera flash. It will not help to represent your company at its best.

Your image is your future: trust it to a true professional!

Commissioning photography Tip 03 – How long should a job take And what is a fair price

To use a food analogy, you can budget for a high-street burger or for a 3-course meal. The point is, quality takes not just experience and skill, but also time. Even a burger from a Michelin star chef is likely to be wonderful quality, but will not be the same experience as a 3 course meal the same Chef has taken 45 minutes preparing.

So try to be realistic, if someone is telling you that a shoot will take a matter of hours while others are quoting a couple of days! Alarm bells should be ringing!

Commissioning photography Tip 02 – Ask the right questions

Written on 11 Feb 2011, 02:19 PM

<!--StartFragment-->

Once you have selected a few photographers to contact, you need to speak to them before youmake your selection.

Apart from ensuring that they are professionally qualified, it makes sense to choose someone with knowledge of your particular area of business. For example, if you need a new watch product brochure, there clearly is no point in talking to a sports photographer with no skills in studio photographic lighting.

If someone tells you “we do everything” it’s probably true! With the word “poorly” added!!!

Choose someone who can show you examples of similar commissions. If they are experienced they are likely to anticipate your needs and answer your questions before they are asked.

Commissioning photography Tip 01 How do you select a professional photographer

Written on 11 Jan 2011, 11:29 AM

<!--StartFragment-->

In theory, anyone earning his or her living from acting as a photographer is by definition, a professional! It is all too easy for someone with no professional experience or qualifications, to promote himself or herself as a professional photographer.

A cheaper quote for your photography project may seem appealing, but what will it really cost you, choosing the wrong photographer could end up costing you a lot more!

One guide is whether the photographer in question is a member of a recognised professional body, and holds any professional qualifications; I have listed the two main UK bodies that access standards and grade professional membership.
